I broke down and got an iPad Air with an Apple Pencil. I know, I know... I have always been THAT designer... the one who likes the versatility of Windows programs over Mac. I also HATE that the biggest name in graphic design has always been ADOBE... and they know it, they can charge BIG BUCKS for their Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign (among their other programs) making them out of reach for the novice artist. Also, most art created with these programs can only be opened by these programs themselves. So, I, being the thrifty artist that I am, found programs that did pretty much the same things as these Adobe programs for much less or even FREE, such as GIMP, Inkscape and Scribus.

But, the truth was, I wanted to try DRAWING ELECTRONICALLY. I have seen more and more art made using tablets and styluses (styli?). I have been researching programs, apps and hardware for this purpose, and came to the conclusion that Procreate was becoming the digital artists go-to program. It is easy to use, and inexpensive to buy (but it only worked on Apple Tablets with the Apple Pencil.) So, since my old Samsung tablet was too old to accommodate the drawing programs and not enough memory power to connect a stylus even if I could find a program that worked on it, I decided to replace it with an iPad Air (5th generation).

Come to find out, the Apple Pencil that my husband had was the first model, and did not work with my new iPad, so, I had to purchase a model 2 Pencil (about $150). So this was a HUGE investment into my art and design business.

After watching several tutorials on YouTube... I found these two very useful and informative:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YuqNLz5AUs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi-CtwX3u0w

But after learning the initial basics, and especially gestures, I played with the included brushes and artistic textures, used masking layers, and even a bit of animation (gif), I have decided that I definitely LOVE this new addition to my creative space!

This is my first ever Procreate drawing. I use Goodnotes on my iPad because I still like the "feel" of a handwritten planner, and notes. So, this was my first ever DIGITAL PLANNER STICKER. The Wheel of the Year (pagan/wiccan calendar) showing the 8 holidays, and the astrological year. I wanted to include the moons, and still might at a later time, but being a moon cycle, it fluctuates year to year and month to month.

I hope you like it. I don't have much in my online Zazzle shop -- McCarron Art & Design -- in way of metaphysical art... yet... that is something in the works, but not at this time.

If you would like to use this digital sticker for your own planner, you may do so, all I ask is to PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW, and say "Hi". I would love to see photos of how you use it in your own planners or notebooks.

Thanks again! Its been a while since I have posted in my blog. Been so busy creating new designs and content for the awesome product in my store that I just keep procrastinating on publishing posts. It is something that I need to get better at that, and I am trying. Honestly! This was something that I wrote in my planner for habits I need to start in 2022.

But, on an up note, I have some really iconic designs that I want to share with you, for the times we live in. McCarron Art & Design has just released two designs to show you support Ukrainian freedom.

The first design is an upheld fist with a ragged Ukrainian colored flag, and the second is a more feminine image with sunflowers and hearts.

McCarron Art & Design will donate proceeds from the sale of these designs on any available Zazzle product to UNHCR, the UN Relief Agency, helping Ukrainians who have fled into neighboring countries of Poland, Moldova, Hungary and Romania. (UNHCR is a BBB accredited charity.) By purchasing this design/product, you will help families fleeing violence, know they are not alone at the most devastating moment of their lives and other Ukrainian Humanitarian efforts.

I ask you to show your support for the people of Ukraine and to help us help them with the proceeds of these designs.

McCarron Art and Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13479737980724871725noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4067714284039666621.post-20842824376484512982021-07-26T14:20:00.000-04:002021-07-26T14:20:09.210-04:00What IS Christmas in July?
Christmas in July is popular in the southern hemisphere, places like Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa have Christmas celebrations in July. Decembers are hot and humid, while July and August are more wintery. (Adobe does not allow you to buy Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and their other exclusive software. I thought it was overpriced then, now, it cost more per year just to "subscribe" and use their software online.) OK... I'll get off my soapbox. The bottom line is that I work mostly with GIMP, an open source, cross-platform image editor.

I have found that GIMP can do almost anything I need it to do when it comes to image cleanup, photo manipulation, and the like. The BIG difference, is that GIMP uses RGB colors, where Photoshop can use CMYK.

If you don't know what that means, here's a quick and overly simplified explanation.

The biggest difference is that CMYK is used for print and RGB is used mostly in digital media.

CMYK are the INKS used by printers. Cyan Magenta, Yellow, and Black. (K stands for Key plate, which in traditional color separation printing, is the plate that holds the detail in the image done in BLACK ink.) Simply put, the more ink colors, the darker the image prints.

RGB is opposite of this process. Images on our computer screen or on TV use light waves, various intensities of Red, Green, and Blue light. The more light you add the brighter the color, and if you mix all three you get pure white light.

With such incredible advancements in computer technology over the last 3 decades, I realized that I have taken for granted that whatever image I create on the screen is "magically" converted to print beautifully on my Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black Canon all-in-one office printer or to show up clearly when uploaded to a website, no matter what program I used to create it.

Getting back to my dilemma...

Originally, NPB (Non-Photo-Blue) would not be picked up by a Stat Camera and the camera would create a "Print Ready" image. Traditional Non-Photo-Blue pencils, and in my clients case, Non-Photo-Blue graph lines, can be easily removed by using the CMYK color separation process used by Photoshop. By removing the Cyan, and combining the rest of the colors, we are left with a black image with no graph lines.

This easy fix is not available in the RGB color process used by GIMP. But I was not giving up. I buckled down and did a whole bunch of research. I scoured the GIMP forums and YouTube videos for days looking for a workaround. I finally found it.

Overcoming this problem took a quite a bit more computer/programing understanding. This is not for the beginner, or those who only use a computer to check email, social media and watch TV. But for those tech savvy designers who have run into this problem with no way to solve it... this workaround is absolutely worth it.

According to the artist's visual infographic below, they did not use a plugin, BUT I learned that I did actually need the plugin Separate+. I did a Google search for the "GIMP plugin Separate+ 0.5.8 download", found it a GIMP forum that I trust and installed it for my Windows operating system per the instructions. GIMP is a open source software, manning that any programmer can write code for the program. While most coders are typically honest, good people, you should also be aware that downloading and running any software could have the potential to contain malicious code, such as viruses and malware. It is always very good to follow this advice.

Be sure to have a current backup of your computer just in case

Download plugins only from a trusted site or source

Use your computer security software to check the file before installing

You will also need to add the CMYK color management ICC profile to GIMP. These ICC profiles used to be available straight from Adobe, but I was greeted with "This site can't be reached" or a 404 error message, on the Adobe site. Most computers have this, and other color profiles already installed into the printer software. Doing a search on my computer for "cmyk.icc", I found the file and COPIED it into GIMP color profile folder. (This folder path is different depending on what kind of operating software you are using and how you installed GIMP originally.)

Once you have installed the plugin and added the CMYK profile to GIMP, restart your computer and then you are ready to go.

Now that the difficult part is done, here is how to remove Cyan from a GIMP image. I found this infographic on Deviantart of all places!

Until next time, keep on keepin' on....

McCarron Art and Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13479737980724871725noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4067714284039666621.post-25143093117611929872019-12-26T16:00:00.000-05:002019-12-26T16:00:04.641-05:00Crafting Season Is OverWow! What a whirlwind of a year! From October to November is when most of my attention is focused on crafting inventory for the Christmas craft shows. The funny thing with craft shows is that you never know what kind of audience you will get. Last year I sold out of my Grinchy ornaments, but didn't sell any etched glass. This year, the etched glass plates and wine glasses practically flew off the table and the ornaments just hung there looking cute.

But, now that the Holiday Craft Show Season is over, the presents unwrapped, and the eggnog poured. I spent some quality time with my family and friends, and now its time to focus on the new year.
Time to set goals, and make those New Years resolutions. My design and production schedule is in my desk planner and I am filling up my first quarter quickly. (I use Google Calendar for reminders and such, but nothing beats a big colorful planner to keep all your goals, notes and ideas. Not to mention washi tape, gel pens and STICKERS!) I love the personalizable - is that even a word? - planners at Zazzle. I didn't design any this year, but there are so many artists who did and so many styles to choose from.

I have some great designs in the works for Valentine Day, and St. Patrick's Day and I will be relieving them in a few weeks. Also there are some exciting things in the works for McCarron Art & Design this year. Stay tuned. So, follow me on any of my Social Media platforms. you won't want to miss these.
Back when computer screens were green, before Photoshop, Wordpress, or any Social Media Sites, Graphic Designers physically created advertising, mostly for print, using Exacto blades, and rubylith. They measured with RULERS. They didn't CODE anything. There was no complicated computer science involved.

So, when I started my online journey in 2008, I had no idea what hex colors, or css or html was. Sure, now, I can probably tell you the definition, and change a few simple lines of code -- IF I REALLY HAD TO, and -- IF SOMEONE WALKED ME STEP BY STEP, but, that's not what I do.
These days an online presence is so easy.

In addition to my website, I blog, I'm on Social Media, I run an Etsy shop, and several Zazzle stores. But I don't own these! These companies allow me to promote my designs on their pages, but they could decide at any moment and for whatever reason to close my store/shop/pages.

I also do not have control over my customer list. A perfect example of this is, the other day I thought, "Wouldn't it be great if I could email the customers who bought my Dog Photo Mug on Zazzle, and let them know about my World's Best Dog Mom tee-shirt I just finished." NOPE! Zazzle doesn't allow that.

Etsy allows a little more freedom with customer correspondence, but, I am responsible for designing, making, packing, shipping the products, and all customer service.

My website, www.Aruba-Sunsets.com, allows me true freedom to manage my business. I monetize the way I feel is best, and have even built an email list of readers that I control.

I felt compelled to write this post today after a crafter friend of mine wanted to break away from Etsy and looked seriously hurt and confused when I turned down the $500 she offered me to design her website (from scratch, using one of those "free" hosting sites.)

Uuugh! I hate those things. Sure they say they are free, but after you add your own domain, email add-on, security, a customizable template, SEO, social media buttons... the list goes on and on... those "free" websites will cost you a fortune. AND there is no guarantee that you will even have purchased the right tools to create a successful business. I know. I've seen it happen more than once to friends.

I know that web designers charge 10x more than that, but it wasn't about the money. I told her, that, even if she had offered to pay "real" web designer wages, and I actually knew how to code a website from scratch, I would never use anything else besides SBI.

She said, "But, YOUR travel website is doing so well!"

She is not the only one who thinks my mad design skills include computer coding! Ugh!

*Shouting in my very best Dr. Leonard McCoy voice* "Damit Jim, I'm an ARTIST, not a Web Designer!"

I explained that I built it using all the tools offered in Solo Build It. Any technical stuff I needed, was learned along the way and was explained simply and easily, even I could understand it. <span style="background-color: white; color: #616161; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I have a nice set of ear buds that came with my Galaxy S9+. They are apparently meant to be worn with the cord over the ear and behind...at least that is what I was told, and they do fit in the ear better worn that way. But, there is nothing holding the cord over the ear.

The Solution

That's a great idea, now how do I do it? After mulling this over for a day or two, I remembered a really cool product called Sugru, that starts out as putty and turns to rubber when it dries. I used it a few years back to secure my loose charger wires from braking, and a few other things.

What if I wrapped the ear bud cord in Sugru and molded hooks???

I ordered an 8-Pack of Sugru in their new mixed colors last week and it arrived today. Each packet is a little smaller than a business card, and holds .17 oz of single use putty. I was pretty sure that each side would take the whole packet, so instead of having two different colored hooks, I mixed the yellow and green together, for a cool marbled effect before splitting it into equal parts.

The putty is highly malleable, with the consistency of bread dough. I rolled the putty into a snake about 3 inches long and pushed the cord into it from the bud. I folded the edges over the cord and smoothed out the seam.

Then, using my Sony head phones as a guide, I formed a hook shape. I also flattened the cord just a little bit.

*If you are trying this project, keep in mind that it has to sit for at least 24-without being disturbed. I used a sheet of copy paper on top of a large hard cover book as my work space. I could then pick up and move the whole thing to a safe place, out of reach from the cats and dog.*

This is what it looked like BEFORE the Sugru is dry.

I was worried about working fast in order to finish before it set. So, I didn't rake the time to make them "pretty". I mean, they are cute, but you can see finger nail marks, and areas where the seam was not completely concealed. However, the truth is, it took about 4 hours before they started to noticeably set. So I could have spent some time cleaning up the edges.

I know my craft... painting, drawing, design... But, when it comes to building my business brand, like most newbie entrepreneurs, I had to learn social media skills, marketing, sales funnels, email promotions and a whole slue of other things to get my business online. In the process of learning, I have had to weed through all the B.S. to find the real nitty-gritty. I have made my share of mistakes, trusting the wrong "Guru", or by wasting time on programs that don't work.

It is so easy to get discouraged, and even jaded by those those stories of "experts", selling their "Easy-to-follow, money-making systems" with their web pages plastered in all their luxuries... the new Bentley, the huge fancy mansion, the new exotic vacation... whatever.

The point of that rant is this... even though we can be overwhelmed by the bad-ugly on our business journey, every now and again we come across truly inspiring stories of those who are making a difference in the world.

One of those stories is UBUNTU Life. I only read about them recently from Zazzle, the online site where I sell my prints. They just partnered with Ubantu, and will be making the worldâs first customizable African Espadrilles. But that is not what makes this company special. It is their core value that makes them shine.

Ubuntu is a South African word that means âI am because we areâ. It is all about interconnectedness and meaningful relationships. All of the "Afridrilles" shoes are handmade-to-order by Kenya mothers, many of whom have special needs children.

Ubantu is empowering women by helping them achieve financial independence. They teach women valuable skills, and provide meaningful jobs with above-market wages with health benefits to help them support their families. They are creating sustainable change that is improving lives of special needs children and braking the cycle of poverty and bringing these kids life-changing care and education. Ubuntu-made products support social impact programs in Kenya creating a positive shift from the stigma surrounding disabilities and health in the region.

And just like that, my faith in humanity is restored.

I invite you to visit their store and read more about this wonderful organization.
I originally had separate stores; one for my fine art prints on canvas, poster paper, or even wood, glass or metal, and one where my designs could be applied to mugs, hats, tee shirts, etc. This year, I decided to simplify my all artwork into one store under my McCarron Art & Design store brand.

In the process of this, I also showcase a collection of some of my favorite watercolor pieces from other artists on the Zazzle platform. Since that collection was published a few weeks ago, I have gotten asked several times: Why don't you have famous artist's paintings in your favorites collection?
Duh! They are already FAMOUS. They don't need my help. No, but seriously, I don't condone the reproduction of famous artworks in my Zazzle store because...

Most pieces from famous artists are copyrighted and can not be reproduced without permission. Printing these famous works on any item - t-shirt, mug or canvas - is a copyright infringement with serious consequences. Jail-time and fines aside, I strongly believe in giving artists credit for his or her hard work.

Since most of these famous artists are dead, if I was to get permission to print their work, any copyright royalties would go to the museum or whomever BOUGHT the copyright... Not the ARTIST. Dead artists don't need money. Which brings me to number...

I wholeheartedly believe in supporting artists. I shop at local craft shows whenever possible and I seek out handmade items. When I find pieces that I love, I follow the makers online via social media and any online stores. I support the beauty they bring to life.

So, there you have it. Three reasons why I don't promote famous artwork, and why I totally love to promote UNFAMOUS artists.
I know that many think that after all the hectic art shows and craft markets before Christmas, a crafter gets to slow down for a few months....
NOPE!
Like most artists, I have a few ways to keep the bills paid during the "SLOW" part of the year.
I design wedding invitations for my website, Aruba-Sunsets.com, which I also write all the content for, sell advertising, and promote products for. There have been some resent changes to internet security that required updates to all 100+ pages. Thank goodness my hosting company takes care of that behind the scenes, but it did interfere with many of my affiliate links, which took a while to correct.
But, more to the point, as a designer, I have been creating Valentine's Day prints and funny St. Patrick's Day T-shirt graphics and phone cases using the cozy, warm 2019 Color of the Year, Living Coral. You can find all these things in my store.
Believe it or not, this week, many makers suggest that it is time to start designing for Father's Day! I will be designing for things that you and I would give to Dad as gifts. ie. golf balls, flasks, shot glasses, beer glasses, ties, playing cards, coffee mugs... you know...
Hope all of you have a fun, safe St. Patrick's Day, and I will talk to you soon. If you need to reach me before then, click the "Contact Me" Page, and send me a line.
Living in a condo means that I have to use my wall space efficiently to showcase my favorite pieces, and to do that, I created a Gallery Wall above our sofa.

I have hardly had a minute to my self lately... let alone, write a post. But, I had to take a few minutes and step away from the crafting madness to update you on what has been happening.

On September 8th, McCarron Art & Design crafts were represented at the Appalachian Renaissance Faire in Piney Flats, TN. That day was a balmy 92 degrees! Not the best weather to be wearing a polyester faux period outfit. I felt really bad for those jousters in full armor and the die-hard performers wearing authentic leather and wool clothing. Next year, it is scheduled for October when North East Tennessee starts to get a little cooler.
What a fun event! There were craft vendors with lovely, magical wares, fortune tellers of various kinds, belly dancers, story tellers, and a Mabon Ritual to end the evening.

On October 20th, I shared a booth at with Heather, the owner of Generations Emporium, at the Camp Placid Fall Festival in Blountville, TN. In spite of the weather being rainy and cold, there was a good crowd (although we were told, not as good as last year.) It seemed the food vendors did really well. The booth for the couple who grew, picked, and canned their own pickles, beets, and salsa was constantly busy. I had to try some and ...they were REALLY GOOD pickles!

November 3rd, Heather and I again shared a table at the Goblin Market hosted by the Hawk and Hawthorn in Barnardsville, NC. Like the Gypsy Carnival, this was mostly a Spiritual/pagan/wiccan themed event. Vendors here sold teas, essential oil mixes, Goddess items, altar tools, crystals, prayer candles. The kids loved my colorful little Worry Dolls. My Rune sets did really well, as well as Scott's Holiday Spray essential oil mix spray. I also sold one of my newest products... Samhain Ritual, Recipes and Journal Pages. This is part of my Magical Planner Series showcasing the 8 Wicca holidays, and a monthly-weekly planner calendar with holidays and moon phases. (Coming soon.) If you would like to be notified when the new pages and planner pages are available, you can subscribe here.
I love doing local craft shows. I always encourage people to buy local, and support local artists! So, of course, Labor Day Weekend, I am here in my studio, crafting up a storm.

I have glass runes drying on trays until baking and curing. I printed and assembled all the booklets that are sold with them. Die-cut custom packaging, and updated my Etsy store with some my latest design prints. I will be uploading some fine art prints for sale there shortly as well.

I had a store on Etsy long before my McCarron Art & Design was established... look for me at WackyWhimsical.com which was my original brand until I expanded to McCarron Art & Design.

While merging the two is on my list of things to do, it will have to wait. The crafting madness is upon me.

You can find me an my designs at:
The client had stated that the project required someone competent in design, layout, and and desktop publishing skills using InDesign. My designer friend had taken offence at the term "Desktop Publisher". It diminishes the complexity of everything that goes into a publication and minimizes the work we do as Graphic Designers. (His attitude was clear to the client, and he ultimately didn't get the contract.)

I completely agree that as trained graphic designers, our work is usually much more refined and and professionally put together that a "Desktop Publisher". I'm a graphic designer who's focus is on print, design, layout. I have a keen understanding of color coordination, and typography and composition.

Circa 1960; unnamed artist, making camera ready art for layout and paste up.
THIS is what Desktop Publishing was BEFORE computers.

Quark was the program of choice when I was in school and even then, in its infancy. I witnessed the dawn of the desktop publishing era. I saw T-squares, French Curves, and non-photo-blue pencils go the way of the dodo bird. I could create intricate layer masks with rubylith and an exacto blades that took hours of meticulous cutting... the computer could do it in a fraction of that time.

In the early 90's, many homes had a computer and everyone and their brother thought they could design business cards, letterhead, brochures, presentations, etc with a few clicks of a keyboard ... and then when they ultimately failed, a real designer, like myself, was called in to fix the mess.

So, I understand my friends agitation at the term. However, InDesign IS called a "Desktop Publishing" program. So, we can not blame non-creative people to understand that there is SO MUCH MORE to "Desktop Publishing" than understanding a computer program.

My advice to GRAPHIC DESIGNERS seeking jobs or projects: When a potential employer or client asks them about their DESKTOP PUBLISHING skills... Don't bristle, turn red, and emit steam from your ears...Explain to the hiring manager why your creative training as a Graphic Designer is so much more valuable to them and their company. Tell them that knowing how to use a program like InDesign is only a tiny fraction of what goes into designing a spectacular catalog, book, or brochure. Remember that, before computers...before there were Graphic Designers and Desktop Publishers, there were Print Designers and Layout Artists. Titles will continue to change, but the objective is the same.... Create stunning designs with images, typology and style!

In case you missed my rant about my Instagram being hacked... I apologize in advance to any of my friends and supporters who have been following my IG BUSINESS account McCarron.Art.Design if you saw any offensive, or distasteful posts. (I don't mean political or slightly off color humor. I don't apologize for that.)
But, apparently my hijackers were following thousands of people looking to "hook up" or show off their booty, and spout sexual innuendos. And Instagram Support did nothing! I reported them as pornographic, but was told that they were not breaking any of Instagram's rules.

So... long story, longer... the only way that I could take back control of my account, is to switch it to a "personal" account, and make it private. Then I had to change my password and add the two-factor authorization. So, right now, no one can follow me without my approval and I can start to manually unfollow the 3 thousand or so unwanted accounts. However, I can only unfollow about 50 at a time. Otherwise, I AM MISUSING that feature! I AM? WTF? So, I will be keeping my account private for a while, at least until I get this awful situation fixed. Please do not get offended if I unfollow you by mistake. Please bear with me as I get back to making my IG feed about art, design, and other inspiring artists. Thank you!

Recently, someone asked if they could buy one from me.

I didn't feel comfortable selling the items I made because, Sharpies, while awesome for DIY crafts, do wear off and fade. If I was going to sell my professional art/crafts, I would have to find a professional grade glass paint.

After some extensive research, I was convinced that the Pebeo Vitrea 160 line was the way to go. This is my review.

Personally, I found these paints to be extremely pricey. But, I ponied-up and bought a box of 9 Pebeo Vitrea 160 assorted glossy glass paint markers. (About $45 from Amazon including the cheapest shipping option.) It took less than a week to get delivery.

According to all their marketing, Pebeo Vitrea 160 is part of a new generation of thermo-hardening, transparent, non-toxic, water-based paints specifically designed for use on glass. It can be applied to glassware, vases, lamps, and even an entire window surface.

The entire line of paints includes both glossy and frosted colors as well as paint mediums (sold separately) for different effects such as crackled paint iridescent glass. (Pebeo also sells a line of Porcelaine 150 paint are not intermixable.)

The Vitrea 160 paint comes in 1.5 oz bottles, or a limited palette in marker style. I chose the markers since I wanted to use it the same way I did my Sharpies.

I did a test batch. Reading the instructions I shook the markers well, and pressed the tip until it filled with paint. Then a painted some designs on my glass disks using all of the colors in my box.

I waited the recommended 24 hours, and then placing them in a cold oven, baked them at 160 °C (325 °F) for 40 minutes, and left them there until cooled.

Since I would be using them to create glass runes which are meant to be handled and cast like dice, I needed to be sure that the paint would not chip off. This first batch was a disaster. The paint scratched of a the slightest touch of a fingernail.

I searched the internet for help, and came across a video promoting using the Pebeo Vitrea paints on glass where it was suggested to test my oven temperature accuracy with an oven thermometer.

I purchased one and tested my oven. Sure enough, even though my oven was set at 325 °F the actual temperature of my oven was 315 °F.

I painted another test batch, and waited the 24 hours. Then I adjusted the oven dial, increasing it 10° and backed a second test batch. Still the same ISSUE!

I did notice, though, that the thicker area's of paint were less likely to chip and scratch off. The problem is that the marker tip does not paint on very thick. It was only at the end of lines or in the middle of dots where some paint pooled.

So, my overall thoughts on these paints... The Pebeo Vitrea 160 Glass Paint markers are not worth the money I dished out. I won't buy them again. I may eventually purchase a 1.5 oz bottle or two and test out a batch painted using a brush. but until I can find a better alternative, I will stick with the oil-based Sharpies.
Lulu's unfinished portrait has beautified my wall for a few months, but yesterday, the finished painting was delivered to Ms. D. to hang in its new home.

Lulu DONE!

I thoroughly enjoy painting these wonderful photos of pets that have brought so much love and joy to our lives, but selling a painting that I have put so much heart, soul, and time into, always leaves me a little sad. But, then I think about how much happiness my art will bring to the new collector.

Interestingly enough, Ms. D. gave my artwork extremely flattering praise and triple my asking price. Knowing that she was so thrilled with the piece eases the angst of parting with it.

Today, I will be working on this cute little Boston Terrier, Lulu. I started painting her over a month ago, but I have had so many irons in the fire.

I was upfront with my client about how long it would take, because I knew I didn't have a whole lot of time to dedicate to watercolor painting right now.

Sure, watercolor painting AND cute dogs are some of my FAVORITE things, and I love these kinds of commissions, but when you are self employed, there are a whole lot of not-fun things that need to get done too.

Which brings me to a question I have been asked many times... How do you keep track of everything?

Honestly, it has been trial an error the last few years. When I was in the corporate world, I didn't go anywhere without my Franklin Covey and Palm Pilot...hahaha remember those? Then came Blackberries... But, I digress.

Running your own business, and keeping track of your own schedule can make a person crazy. I tried Google Calendars, but printing them for when I was "off-line" didn't work.

I love the beautiful, new, planners that are available on the market today. Erin Condren, Create 365 Happy Planners, and others. They were beautiful and kept my creative juices flowing, but they just didn't work for me. They may work for you, but I am very peculiar about visual planning. For example, the week HAS to start on MONDAY so that I can see my week before me, AND the end goal --> THE WEEKEND! I know silly, right. But it is my motivator.

Two of my favorites specifically made for "the creative entrepreneur" were Leonie Dawson's Shining Year Workbooks, and The Makers Yearbook Toolkit.

Again, both of these had awesome planning advice, and organizing tips, but they just weren't perfect for me.

So, I took ALL THE GREAT INFO, and designed my own planner that worked for me. (You can kind of see it in the foreground of this picture, but had to blur the client info and other calendar appointments.) Maybe, I will sell my own planner in the future, but not right now. I printed out a year's worth of my weekly page design, and 3-hole-punched them. I use color coded highlighters (I like Sharpie Accent), pens, and sticky flags to block work times, and schedule projects.

** Sharpies are recommended when writing on non-paper flags, tags and tags. I love gel pens, but gel-ink does not dry on the non-porous surface of the plastic. It SMEARS right off and onto your hands!

Some of the sticky flags I use:
Post-it Arrows
Florescent Sticky Note Tabs

I still use Google Calendar to keep my appointments, mostly for calendar alerts. I review my G-Calendar every few days, and make sure that my appointments have been hand written into my physical planner.

I use Google Suite and Workep to keep track of my many projects, brake them down into manageable time/task chunks. Workep is free for the basic "Lite" package - perfect for me. (But they offer monthly subscription upgrades for when your business grows, and needs more advanced tools like multiple teams and time tracking.)

As a former Executive Assistant, things like time management and scheduling are in my blood. The problem is, I kept track of MY BOSS's TIME. It's a little harder now that I AM THE BOSS LADY.

Staying organized in a creative "mess" is a favorite subject of mine, and I'm sure I'll post more about it. But, my advice to you, is find what works for YOU!

But for now... I gotta go paint Lulu!McCarron Art and Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13479737980724871725noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4067714284039666621.post-80023743810002653002018-04-07T00:23:00.000-04:002018-05-14T00:54:18.610-04:00Samsung Android Oreo Update Disaster

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you are anything like me, you rely heavily on your smart phone being, well, smart! I have been an Android/Samsung fan ever since I traded a Nokia for a Note 2 many years ago. Since then, I have had several upgrades, the last one being the S8. It is a year old and I am eligible for an upgrade. The new S9+ comes with updated software too!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I was considering it, until⌠DISASTER STIKES!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Android rolled its software update out to all eligible phones, including my S8. I have had several minor updates in the past, so I thought little of it. I made sure all my essentials were backed up, and then hit the update overnight button. The next day, all HELL broke loose.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My phone was âblowing upâ with alert dings every few minutes. Not only did the update change my assigned alert sounds, but now it was alerting me to EVERY NEW EMAIL received in my Gmail inbox! My spam mail catches most of the junk, but I still get hundreds of emails a day. Some are newsletters I subscribe to, some are store coupons, some are friends, and some are very important âmust respond NOWâ Urgent Messages.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Anyway, to make a long story short, Gmail allows you to filter messages into custom âlabelsâ. I could then assign separate ringtones from my phone to alert me when I received an email that was filtered into that label.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The new software was supposedly designed to help make things simpler. But it only gives me the choice of setting alerts for âUrgentâ emails (which I would have to assign contacts to) or ALL emails! How the HELL does this make my life easier???

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For those of you who are confused about why I am so angry and frustrated, let me give you an exampleâŚ.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Normally, I could be elbows deep in craft glue and paint, or⌠IDK, hydrochloric acid for etched glass projects⌠from the other room where my phone is on the charger, I hear Captain Mal Reynolds ask Jayne Cobb if he wants to âRun this shipââŚ[Yes, I am a geek]âŚthat ringtone tells me that I just received an email from a member of the Art League. Not exactly a drop-what-youâre-doing-urgent message. But, if I hear Vaderâs Imperial March, my life might depend on how fast I respond to that email.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But nowâŚ. âpingâ I just got another ambiguous emailâŚ. Must go look at my phoneâŚ.ARRG! Its just a coupon from Michaelâs CraftsâŚ. Android WHY did you have to go and ruin a good thing. âpingâ I canât take this anymore!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I spent the last two days researching and found that it is an issue with the new Android Oreo OS and the new Google rollout. There is no fix, so I must âdowngradeâ to the Android 7 (Nougat) which is the version between the one that came loaded on my phone originally and the latest version that SUCKS and wonât let me assign alert ringtones Gmail labels. So, I canât just do a factory reset. I must do something called âFirmware Installâ.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Thank goodness for Google, and Youtube. I know this is not a Techie Blog, but if you are having the same problem, here is the info I found to be the most helpful.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">https://youtu.be/qqpucWXyfqY

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">https://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s8-and-s8-plus/878062-how-downgrade-oreo-nougat.html

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What a mess! I finally have Android Version 7 back on my Galaxy S8, and I am so glad that I discovered this major bug before I purchased a new Galaxy S9 with this problem built in straight out of the box! I am going to hold on to my S8 for a while. At least until this bug gets fixed or some genius app developer comes up with a patch or work-around. Sorry Android⌠Love your phones⌠but you canât compete with google for productivity apps!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I lost 3 days of work trying to fix this disaster and it still is not quite over. Now, I have the daunting task of personalizing all my settings and setting up all the apps that were deleted during the reboot, including adding all those social media accounts back on the phone. [All the business branding I do from my phoneâŚso many Twitter accts, Instagram accts, google accts, Facebook pagesâŚI really hope I can remember all my passwords!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That is my rant for the week. My advice, If you havenât upgraded, donât until you can be sure the upgrade really does make your life easier!

At the time of this writing, 99% of my designs have been moved over... a feat in itself since they all had to be reformatted to fit the new platform and templates... The last few designs specifically made for www.Aruba-Sunsets.com will be transitioning in April.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It was a big decision that I did not take lightly. For the last few years, I have had designs on both sites but with really needed to consolidate my efforts. I mean, with my handmade (Etsy) store taking off, plus freelance jobs, and all my other irons in the fire, my free time is precious. I work hard on all my art and designs. Listing them needs to be easy. I have no patience for complicated interfaces that are difficult to navigate and a K2 sized learning curve.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Closing my Cafe Press and focusing on my Zazzle Stores made sense for me. My store wasn't getting the traffic it needed from the marketplace shoppers, and the royalty on designs is limited and controlled by Cafe Press. So, my ROI at just wasn't cutting mustard.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">After using both sites, I find Zazzle's store interface easier and more user friendly and I have more control over my designs and royalties. Also, a big selling point for Zazzle is that I can use vector images!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I did my due diligence and I compared product and print quality because I didn't want to compromise on quality products. Both sold the same or similar quality products, and the printing of both companies were very good!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In the future, I may also consider using Redbubble if I feel their demographics are a good fit for my customers. But for now, I am focusing my print-on-demand efforts on my Zazzle stores.McCarron Art and Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13479737980724871725noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4067714284039666621.post-55484787366688860482017-10-22T19:35:00.000-04:002018-07-14T00:56:50.008-04:00Fun with Watercolor Class - Tower de EiffelIt was an absolute pleasure to have these lovely ladies in my Fun with Watercolor Class this afternoon.
